Module Rack Vol. 1

Orchestra and percussion for the Cascade studio. Eighty-five modules, every one numbered, all on one clock: strings, orchestra, percussion, drones, transport, a farmyard, a choir of chanting monks, a Turkish psych section, a desert, a garage kit, a German electronics bench and a Kingston yard. Retune the whole rack to slendro, pélog, gagaku, makam or Partch on CASC 104, then run the lot through the pedal board on CASC 105. Press Power on, then play the keys, tap the pads, or run the sequencer. Drones latch: click a key to start it, click again to stop.

Input

CASC 106

A guitar, a mic, anything coming into your interface. Pick Live input on any desk track and it records as its own stem. Turn Monitor on and it goes through the pedal board with everything else — leave it off and the desk takes it dry.

Monitor sends it back out of your speakers. On a mic that is how you get feedback — use headphones, or leave Monitor off and let the desk record it dry.

MIDI

CASC 107

Play the armed module from a real keyboard. Arm a module first with its Keys button, then play — the octave buttons still apply.

Woodwind

Breath, reed and vibrato

Brass

Filters that open like a bell

Tuned

Bars, bells and slides

Percussion

Skins, metal and seeds

Computer keys play the armed module: A to K are the white notes, W E T Y U the black, Z/X shift the octave.

Drones

Electric sheep and valves · keys latch

Transport

Rotors, engines, rails and water

Farmyard

Formants and vibrato, no samples

Voices

Chant, across cultures · all of them latch

Every one of these is a sustained vowel with the throat shaped by filters, and none of them is a sample. Latch two at a fifth and let them beat against each other.

Strings

Bowed, plucked, and the box around them

Western

Twang, whistle and one valve oscillator

Put the Twang through Spring and Echoplex on CASC 105, turn Tremolo up, and you are most of the way to a desert.

Anadolu

Turkish psych · saz through the fuzz

Garage

A cheap kit in a small room, hit hard

The beats on CASC 1307 latch like the drones do: click to start, click again to stop. Everything you start shares one counter, so loops lock to each other however late you join.

Elektronik

Düsseldorf, mid-seventies · sequencer, strings and a voice

These are deliberately dry. Put them through Hall or Dub on CASC 105 if you want the room back.

Yard

One drop, rockers, steppers and the bass under them

Start a drum loop on CASC 1501 and a bass line on CASC 1503 and they land on the same grid. The bass follows the tuning on CASC 104, so switch to pélog and the whole thing moves with it.

Every sound here is synthesised live in your browser, with nothing sampled. These are the same voices used on WBLX 2002 to 2006, ready to move into the Cascade studio.
