Track A — The story

His band were a bunch of hard-rocking Scots who could play anything and weren’t afraid to get weird. SAHB’s shows were legendary: comic-book heroes, bagpipers, and even the odd bare-bottomed dancer. Alex would smash through fake brick walls, spray-paint rival bands’ gear, or show up on stage straight from a swim in a nearby lake.

The music was just as bold, mixing hard rock, blues and a dash of theatre. Their cover of “Delilah” hit the UK Top 10, and their own songs—like “Faith Healer” and “Boston Tea Party”—still pack a punch. But underneath the clown makeup and wild antics, Harvey was a peace-loving guy who believed in community and looking out for the underdog.

Track A — The legacy

SAHB never quite cracked America, but they built a loyal following at home, especially with their epic Christmas shows in Glasgow. Even after the band split, their influence lived on: punk legends and rockers alike tip their hats to Alex and his crew.

The band’s message was simple. Have fun, be yourself, and don’t take life too seriously. It was an ethic that carried Harvey from the Gorbals to the Top of the Pops studio without ever sanding down his edges. He was too sharp, too Scottish and too restless for that.

“Faith Healer” (1973) — the slow-building sermon that became their signature.
